Hi everyone, I’m Jess. Li, Welcome to our Chinese food recipes let me introduce Chinese home cooking tools for you at this page!
Chinese home uses these things in our kitchen every day. That said, you don’t absolutely need any of these items to cook from my blog. But if you’re interested in broadening your base of kitchen equipment, here are some of the basic tools that we use and recommend. Not everything here is specifically in the category of Chinese cooking tools, but maybe useful for preparing Chinese recipes all the same! All of our recipes reference this Chinese cooking tools page whenever we use them. We provide detailed directions an how to use these Chinese cooking tools in our recipe posts and when you click on any cooking tool link, it will open this tools page and jump to the specific Chinese cooking tool that is used. Take advantage of this gallery of Chinese cooking equipment and other useful kitchen tools and we are sure you will learn some new skills!
We have some Amazon links on this page so you can view our recommended Chinese cooking tool’s prices on amazon and buy it. This is the most important of Chinese cooking tools. As many of you probably already know, many Chinese dishes are cooked using a wok, which is a wide and somewhat shallow domed pot that gets wickedly hot when you have a good flame going. Our woks reach temperatures that we’re pretty sure Smoky the Bear wouldn’t approve of. But it’s the high heat that gives food that indescribable, flavorful edge known as “wok hay.”
You’ll also need a handy wok lid for steaming, boiling, and bringing up the temperature for things that need a bit of longer cooking time. When in doubt, whip out your wok!
Ok, so don’t be tempted to get a non-stick model. At the temperatures required for Chinese cooking, these are of questionable safety. Don’t start a fire, but don’t be afraid to heat that thing up, either! The wok is the heart of any Chinese kitchen. Just make sure you find a good one.
These days, some ranges come with a big wok burner, which has that bigger flame needed for authentic Chinese cooking. I think we’re the only one we know who has one of these. Anyway, if you have a regular-sized gas or electric stove, you may want to consider investing in a wok ring. These aren’t strictly necessary, but helpful nevertheless.
A wok ring sits on top of your existing burner and ensures that your wok won’t slide around while you’re cooking. Personally, we don’t use one and I don’t think it’s all that necessary if you have a cast iron or steel grate on your gas range, but that doesn’t mean it’s not useful.
Fox Run Spatula
Chinese cooking requires a good metal spatula. For most stir-fries you can use any run-of-the-mill implement you have lying around (made out of wood or metal), but for things like fried rice, glutinous rice cakes, or anything you’re making in large amounts that might stick to your wok, it’s handy to have a sturdy metal spatula that really scrapes up the tasty bits on the bottom of the pan and can handle large amounts of food with one flick of your wrist. There is a good traditional spatula and hoak set on Amazon that I think is quite authentic. The 14 inch length is a good size for home use and the ones pictured below are Fox Run 48763 Spatula & Ladle Wok Tool Set, 16.5-17.5 inches, Brown
Butcher Knife for Home Kitchen
The ultimate tool for slicing, dicing, chopping, scraping, and scooping—Chinese-style cleavers have it all. Rather than having a large set of knives of different sizes and shapes, Chinese chefs often just use this ONE tool for everything. It’s all about how you manipulate it to get different results. One fell swoop and it powers through pork bones. After a quick wash, it can slice onions or a block of tofu ever-so-delicately too.
Knife selection can be a very personal choice, and it is always best to buy these things in a store. But if you can’t find one, this model is both economical and useful for more heavy duty chopping, and the low price makes it almost a no-brainer. That said, you absolutely don’t needthis knife to cook the dishes on this blog. Most of the cutting that you will do for Chinese cooking can be done with a conventional knife. If you are interested in acquiring one of these, definitely shop around. In a pinch, my dad has used this cleaver to cut kindling…so that should give you an idea of the durability.
Kitchen Knife Sharpener
There’s nothing more dangerous in the kitchen than a dull knife! My dad likes to get the sharpening stones out every once in a while but we’ve had this simple knife sharpener for a long time and it does the job quickly and easily for most knives. I’ve seen my dad use it too!
In the old days and even today, Chinese cooks would use a pine tree cutting board because it was soft and easy on the cleaver and perfect for meats. You may be able to see this today in some Chinese restaurants where they sell roasted meats and cut them to order. A more practical, readily available choice is a large rectangular bamboo cutting board, which is quite versatile, and very easy to clean. The one below that we use is great and has a groove around the board to catch excess liquid before it can drip off the board and onto the counter – very handy!
Swify Spider Set
This Stainless steel Strainer is great for frying or straining and is commonly seen in many Chinatown restaurants, This kitchen Strainer is made of high-quality stainless steel, Net wiring and sturdy outer framework and handle, won’t react with foods, safety and durable.
The concave net catches food securely while releasing oil and other residues. Perfect for frying foods, like potato chips, chicken legs, and scoop up noodles, spaetzli, pasta, spaghetti and more.
Without a doubt, this will save you the most headaches in the kitchen and is the most essential of all electronic Chinese cooking tools. Rice cookers these days come in a variety of styles and price points. Some have tons of different settings (for cooking different kinds of rice, porridges, and the like), while others just have an on and off button. Whatever your preference is, one of these babies will make sure you have perfect rice waiting for you every time.
My old rice cooker finally broke on me after many years using. So I searched a few days looking for a good one. After reading all the good reviews I decided to get this one. When I took the Cooker from the box I was impressed with the shining and beautiful design. It looks very good quality and the color is my favorite color too. I used it the very first day. I did rice one the bottom pork and potatoes on the top. It was delicious. The rice is not hard not soft. It is perfect. Since then I have been using it every day for rice meet soap. It is quick and easy to use. It is all digital screen. Easy to clean too. I am absolutely happy with this cooker!
Multi-Use Pressure Cooker
This multi-use programmable pressure cooker is the most popular size serves up to 6 people and perfect for everyday meals. according to some buyers’ comments, this multi-purpose pressure cooker has a good review, half of the bad reviews. Chinese cookers often use the pressure cooker to do stewed pig’s trotters, stewed beef, and ribs.
Instant Pot is a smart Electric Pressure Cooker designed by Canadians aiming to be Safe, Convenient and Dependable. Instant Pot Duo is a 7-in-1 programmable cooker, it replaces 7 kitchen appliances as it has the functions of a pressure cooker, slow cooker, rice cooker, steamer, sauté, yogurt maker & warmer. 14 built-in smart programs (Soup, Meat/Stew, Bean/Chili, Poultry, Sauté, Steam, Rice, Porridge, Multigrain, Slow Cook, Keep-Warm, Yogurt, Pasteurize & Jiu Niang) cook your favorite dishes with the press of a button. A 24-hour timer allows for delayed cooking. Automatic keep-warm holds the temperature of the food until you serve it.
Chinese Metal Steamer
what’s the best way to reheat things then? For things that need to be crispy, we just heat up the wok, cast iron pan or sauté pan. For most everything else, we use this multi-level steamer to reheat leftovers, including rice, veggies, pasta, lasagna or whatever. It’s actually extremely fast and effective. We also use it steam vegetables, melt butter, and reconstitute old, dried out brown sugar.
It’s a really great tool to have in the house, and it probably is a lot healthier than the microwave oven. Because it’s metal, it’s much easier to clean and maintain than the bamboo steamer, making it perfect for everyday use.
Terrific Strong Blender
Blendtec blenders can also heat your food during the blend cycle. For instance, if you want soup for dinner, a Blendtec blender can blend it up and heat it up at the same time so it’s ready to serve straight from the blender jar. No need to heat your soup in a pan. Can your old blender do that? No pan and no additional heating time means less cleanup. Not only can Blendtec blenders heat your food, they can also make ice cream. Actual ice cream can be made with the exact same blender that makes soup.
Drinks, appetizers, main courses, and desserts can all be made with the same blender using the same jar. The time it takes to make each course could be measured in seconds not minutes or hours. Cleanup for an entire multi-course meal could be as simple as pushing the pre-programmed, self-cleaning button to wash a single jar, and just like that, you’ll be done. There is a reason that having the world’s most technologically advanced blender is worth every penny, it gives you more time to focus on life and the people who matter to you.
Chinese Bamboo Steamer
The bamboo steamer allows you to make multiple dishes at once by stacking layer upon layer of bamboo racks, requiring only one burner and one wok. Each dish (set in its own rack) can be cooked in its own time, and several layers can be added. One set consists of two racks and one lid, but you can get as many as you need.
We use the steamer most often to steam dumplings and buns. Just place your steamer in the wok, fill the wok with water until it comes up to about half an inch on your steamer. Then line each level of the steamer with a layer of thin napa cabbage leaves or cheesecloth, place the dumplings two inches apart on each tier, and steam to perfection! Once your food is cooked, you also have an instant, impressive serving platter. They come in various sizes. You’re going to want a large one, around 10 inches across. There is a selection of them on Amazon and you can see that they vary in price so you can select someone to buy!
These are key for hearty winter stews, soups, and bubbling dishes of eggplant or tofu. They go right from the stove to the table too!
Decorative Earthen Pots are also available and double and a more attractive serving vessel. Shown below are one of many varieties and designs available so keep on the look-out for a nice one at your local Asian store, or if you’re traveling abroad in China or Asia!
I like to use this stone bowl to make chicken soup rice. In China, there are many roadside restaurants that use casseroles for cooking. Of course, using the stone bowl in various places in China can make a lot of delicious food. In fact, in Asian countries, the stone bowl is also a common cooking tool.
Stainless Steel Folding Hot Dish Plate Bowl Clip Plate
Did you ever wonder how you were going to lift a hot plate from your steamer in tight quarters or burning yourself while doing it? This tool makes things a whole lot easier for smaller sized plates and dishes and we use tools like this one often in our kitchen.
Multi-Purpose Kitchen Scissors
Get a good pair of kitchen shears and you’ll wonder how you lived without it. Trim fish fins, shellfish, cut raw or cooked poultry, or even flowers, quickly and safely. You can maneuver a pair of sharp shears much more effectively and safely than a chef’s knife. Depending on how much cooking you do, our recommendation is to buy a professional one and it will be a pleasure each time you use it and will last you for years! We have used this model below for years, like the simplicity of the design and have really never had the need to sharpen it. It is an essential tool for the avid cook and gardener. We harvest many vegetables and crops with this durable shear every season!
Stainless steel tongs tweezer
Stainless steel tongs tweezer has many uses in the kitchen, its fine-tip design easily grasps delicate item. This stainless steel cookware is great along with other kitchen supplies. Wok Skimmer Fry
We all want high performance and a price on par with our expectations of what we expect from the dollars we spent on a product. We all have made our “returns” when the expectations gap was just too big. Furthermore, those of us who have been burned by underperformance in quality…well, we’re ALWAYS WARY! So, I am compelled to write this review because when there is a solid product for an economical price that has esthetic design appeal…and it simply does what it was supposed to do without breaking, ripping, cracking, tearing, shredding, fraying, well, you get the idea. This product IS GREAT. It’s great for daily use. It’s great for not having to worry about scratching up a mirrored stainless steel surface. It’s great in how it’s handle angles to dip the spoon. And finally, it’s great in the esthetic modern, sleek, non-hollow solid handle’s good looks. I give it an A+. Yes, it is not super heavy like my All-Clad ladle, but it’s solid & light…but I will never worry about scratching this! My mind is worry-free…isn’t that what you really want in a daily use product. High marks. Great design. Solid manufacturing. An A+ for sure. Buy it.

Stainless Steel Garlic Press
We have an Oye Stainless Steel Garlic Press that we bought on Amazon. The price is decent and it works great. It’s the best for avoiding garlicky fingers and I have to say, chopping large amounts of garlic is probably my least favorite kitchen task ever. There is a LOT of garlic involved in Chinese cooking.
Cheese Grater Stainless s Sharp
I wish I had this as a kitchen tool years ago. Front the first time I used it, the grating was easy and very fine. So for ginger especially- which is hard to a fine chop, this grater made it so easy, and quick to grate. Very impressed especially since I cook with ginger every week and I don’t necessary want the big chucks in my meals. The grater does an awesome job of giving me fine finished grated nuts, cheese, ginger, garlic, chocolate and other items that I don’t want to throw into a large chopper when I only need one of clove grated.
The cleanup is easy and it also comes with a little cleaning brush that helps to get any residuals out of the grater. Once you are done washing and its dry – you can place the cover to keep is in your kitchen drawer. I was also able to use the cover while grating which allowed me to grate my small ginger and garlic pieces without my fingers touching the grating surface. It provides safety for your hands when grating some pieces.
Spring Chef Box Grater
Sometimes you just need a simpler box grater for quick and easy shredding or to grate some ginger. They are inexpensive and essential in the kitchen for quick and easy tasks.
some buyer loves the grater with its options of different grate types. The grater is very sharp and is very stable. The last time he used it with the unit he wasn’t watching carefully and gouged a big chunk out of my thumb knuckle. BE CAREFUL! The rubber grip at the bottom makes this the best cheese grater he have encountered, along with the large size.
Baking Sheet with Cooling Rack
Here are the reasons I recommend this rack:
1) The construction is heavy gauge, solid stainless steel – the best quality that doesn’t attract a magnet (yes, I tested it).
2) The finish is bright and smooth; no pitting or discolorations or snags. All the welds are precise. Constructed with an eye for detail.
3) The grid is tight, which will keep your foods from sagging through.
4) The design is excellent, with three cross bars, each with two feet, for a total of six feet. The rack is rigid and stable.
5) The dimensions fit perfectly in the standard half-pans on the market. I have Nordic Ware pans, and this rack fits precisely.
6) The company contacted me in a follow-up email to ensure I was satisfied with their product. That speaks well of Kitchenatics.
Finally, let me be clear: I received nothing from anyone in return for a (good) review. I’m not one of the army of reviewers getting stuff for free from Amazon retailers. This review is unbiased and honest.
Mortar & Pestle
This Green Marble Mortar and classic shaped pestle facilitate fine grinding of a variety of herbs, spices, and other foods. 3″ tall, 3-1/4″ dia. bowl. 4″ long pestle. 2 oz. capacity.
I use this almost every day. It’s great for a very small quantity of spices (like grinding up black pepper for dinner). If you want to grind a large amount of spices at once, or grind up pesto or salsa or whatever, then you will need a MUCH larger mortar and pestle than this one. But if you just want a cute little mortar and pestle for small amounts of spices, you can’t go wrong with this. The green color is very nice.
Porcelain Soup Bowls
I was looking for a bowl that would hold a lot of soup so that I wouldn’t have to go back to the pot to get more. I liked the looks of this and decided to try it. I was pleasantly surprised when it arrived, well packaged. It’s a good size, good weight and overall a strong bowl, just what I was looking for, not to mention beautiful. I accidentally bumped it on my granite counter and it stayed solid, not that I recommend bumping things on the counter on purpose, but it’s not a thin cheap bowl. Overall I am VERY satisfied with it.
Many Asian countries now use chopsticks for dining, but chopsticks originated in China. Chopsticks are one of the must-have utensils for Chinese people. They are used every day for dinner.
Great, exactly what I wanted, not painted and not pointy at the end, just the correct length and thickness… Chinese chopsticks are the real chopsticks folks. These arrived in lovely packaging and are exactly what I was hoping for. Natural bamboo with no finish, a simple and elegant design. Perfect.I hand wash them with hot water and soap and dry quickly.
Asian Soup Spoons
High quality ceramic material is durable and great for any kitchen Bright in color. Made from ceramic materials. Asian style soup spoon.
These are key for sipping your soups and porridges without burning your tongue. They’re also the perfect size to cradle a wonton or a soup dumpling. Plus, they’re pretty.
Bamboo Cooking Utensil
These reusable bamboo kitchen utensils are a must for every self-respecting chef who wants a complete and practical kitchen! Having everything you need for the ultimate cooking experience, this set is also made from eco-friendly, 100% safe bamboo wood, a great choice for the entire family.
I love my Bamboo Cooking Utensils. I use wooden utensils all the time but some are not coated and get stained quickly. These have a nice natural finish that looks good on my counter and resist staining. The length of the handle is a nice size. They seem to be a better quality. Only thing is that the salad tongs don’t fit in the caddy.
Nowadays, rolling pin is already the most common tool for buns. The rolling pin can not only bun, but also an important tool for making noodles, dumplings and making meringues and making all kinds of cakes. Rolling pin is divided into various models of different thickness and length. Different types of rolling pins have different uses.
You may already have one in your kitchen, but if not, you should buy one so you can make a lot of onion pancakes and buns. I like using the tapered French-style rolling pins rather than the traditional rolling pins with the handles. In China, the rolling pins don’t have handles either.
Canning Glass Jars with Lids
Ball Mason Jars can be used many unique ways. You can make them into soap dispensers, salt or herb shakers, salad shakers, toothbrush holders, bird feeders, pudding cups, crayons, art supplies, drinking cups and so much more. These large size jars leave you even more room for anything you can think of.
Cast Iron Skillet
I really love this cast iron 10 inch skillet from Lodge! I debated for a long time whether or not purchase one, For me, a purchase like this is about an investment, and I want my investment to last a long time.. I also really like the fact that this is made in the USA. American made products are just not easy to find anymore. But really, the proof in the quality of this cast iron was obvious when i made sweet potato corn bread and baked it in the oven in this skillet. It came out so nice and brown and moist. I’m enclosing pictures, so you can see the nice way it cooked the corn bread on both the top and bottom of the bread. Sorry, the pan in the first picture is a bit oily looking….I had cooked in the pan and then washed and oiled it. If you like this review, please click the helpful button under the review. Most of the cooking tools introduce above are used in the kitchens of Chinese families, which is what we use to make recipes in the kitchen! Questions about anything you see here? Comments are as follows!
Kitchen Scale is also an indispensable tool in the kitchen, especially useful for Baking and Cooking.
Here’s a good Kitchen Scale product sold on Amazon. Easy to use, digital buttons for both items. They have varying units of measuring weight. Seem to be accurate. Kitchen scale also has a zeroing option to calibrate weight in different containers and still maintain proper weight of portions.
KitchenAid Hand Mixers
The 7-Speed Hand Mixer with Stainless Steel Turbo Beater II Accessories, is ideal for powering through heavy ingredients. The Pro Whisk attachment is included and perfect for whipping egg whites to fluffy peaks or whip cream to top your favorite dessert.
I often use it to mix and stir eggs, and it can also come in handy when making mooncakes.
